Holiday Club
Holiday Club - October Half Term
Each year we hold a holiday club during the October half term week. 2008 saw the
church decorated like an olympic stadium and was full of excited children taking
part in a fun packed week. 2009 is shaping up to be even better as we set sail on
a pirate adventure!
2009: LANDLUBBERS FIND TREASURE AT NBC!
After 2 days of searching the NBC desert island, 45 children aged from 4 to 11 discovered
some very special buried treasure!
Anyone visiting NBC during our annual holiday club could have been forgiven for
thinking that they'd stumbled onto a desert island right in the heart of Newbury.
Once you'd made your way through the jungle reception area, you emerged onto our
big beach, complete with palm trees, beach hut and mountain. On Thursday morning,
we set off on a journey around the island in search of Captain P. I. Rate's buried
treasure. By studying Paul's letter to the church in the town of Philippi, our young
crew managed to solve all of the clues that Captain Rate had left behind for us.
Starting on Thursday morning, we learnt about who Paul was and about how he spoke
with Jesus on the road to Damascus. After lunch, we investigated who Jesus is and
why Paul thought it was so important that everyone should know him - Jesus died
to take away our wrongs, and he rose again too! On Friday morning, we learnt that
God wants us to shine like lights - just like the lighthouse over on the east of
our island! Finally, on Friday afternoon we reached the end of our journey around
the island, but learnt that following Jesus is just the start of a journey.
Aside from this very important detective work, there was also plenty of time during
the 2 days for some pirate games, jokes, singing and craft. Each year-group had
their own beach hut base so that they could meet in smaller groups, with each group
ably assisted in both their study of Philippians and in completing their crafts
by our large crew of adult pirates and teenage ship-mates.
And the treasure?? Well, it turned out that all the clues led us back to Paul's
letter to the Philippians and we realised that knowing Jesus was the best treasure
you could ever find!
"Nothing is as wonderful as knowing Christ Jesus my Lord. I have given up everything
else and count it all as rubbish. All I want is Christ."
Philippians 3 v 8 (CEV)
On the Sunday morning, we shared this good news about knowing Jesus with the 11am
congregation, and had a buffet lunch and prize distribution to celebrate our find.
