Small Groups

The church has established a number of 'small groups' meeting regularly in homes around the area.

In a sizeable church, such as Newbury Baptist, it can be difficult to build relationships with everyone. Meeting regularly with a few people helps us relate more effectively as we share issues, insights, prayer and action together.

Small Group report : July 2007

In July 2007 our small group spent the evening visiting Andrew Hazelden in his pottery studio near Oxford.

Andrew has been working as a potter for over 20 years and also gives talks to small groups using the imagery of the potter and the clay and how they relate to our Christian lives.  We all thoroughly enjoyed the evening. Andrew was very welcoming and the whole atmosphere was warm and friendly.

As Andrew moulded the clay in front of us he used the metaphor of God moulding our own lives which was very thought-provoking and made more powerful by watching the clay in his hands.

He challenged our ideas further by smashing a ready made pot in front of us but by explaining that after moistening it, he would be able to build it up again. In the same way sometimes God needs to break parts of us completely in order to rebuild them.

The whole experience was a lot of fun but also a time for reflection and Andrew created an atmosphere perfect for this. We would encourage any other small groups to visit Andrew as it would be wonderful for them to experience the evening themselves.
